Christmas Traditions
Joanna over at One Krusty Mama recently posted about her Christmas traditions and it struck a chord with me, so I thought I'd post about the traditions that my family has or had, and what our little family is starting for traditions now!
I have fond memories of Christmases past.
*Note: my tenses might be past and present...because we still hold this tradition to this day!*
Christmas Eve was the big day - my Mom would pick up various meats and cold cuts from the deli, buns from the bakery, and a jug of chocolate milk (unless my Dad brought it home from work - he drives truck for a company that, amongst other things, hauls milk). Why chocolate milk?
It's the highlight of the meal! We didn't keep it in the fridge during the rest of the year and very much look forward to it at our Christmas Eve dinner.
Speaking of dinner...it's the same every year, and so delicious!
It's called faspa - a low German term for a meal that consists of buns, meats, cheeses, jams and desserts. So very good!!
My Mom would make the table special with the Christmas tablecloth, fancy tableware and we drank our chocolate milk out of the good glasses. She'd even light candles and we'd eat by the candlelight!
Afterwards we'd help clean up and my Mom would set out baked goods and other treats including kransjes met witte spikkeltjes (yes, I had to look it up!) which, translated, means chocolate rings with white candies. It's a Dutch treat only available at Christmastime - thankfully we have a Dutch deli and market right in our town that brings them in, along with the traditional chocolate letter, of course.
My Dad would read the Christmas story and when we were younger, my siblings and I would sometimes put on a play or presentation of sorts (one year we used trolls of various sizes to tell the Christmas story).
And then it was present time! We saved our stockings for Christmas morning right before church.
With Baby Bear around now, and being that I'm married, trying to organize when and with whom on which days we'd spend various events is always interesting. Papa Bear's family has a fondue tradition that they do on Christmas Eve also, so we've started alternating which family we spend that night with each year, and then other family chooses another day.
We like to keep Christmas Day for our little family - we don't plan much other than sleeping in a bit, having a great breakfast (I'm thinking waffles this year but we've done those Christmas Morning Wife Saver breakfasts in the past, too), snacking throughout the day and then having a bigger dinner (this year is going to be a small ham, mashed potatoes, veggies, stuffing and gravy).
We'll have a few movies ready for during the day and afternoon, and we'd like to take a walk with Baby Bear at some point, perhaps around our local lake. I'm really hoping it snows a bit so we can take a few pictures (time to brush up on the automatic picture taker thingy on my camera!).
Of course we open gifts, usually after breakfast. Because Papa Bear and I aren't exchanging gifts this year it's going to be Baby Bear's show (as if it wouldn't be anyway, right?) but it will be great for pictures!
What are your holiday traditions?

3 conversations:
well here we go... Since me and two of my other siblings have gotten married it has been trick to continue our family tradition of going to my moms on christmas eve for faspa(but she does it with fruit salad and sasage rolls as well) and then of course the ice cream cake from dairy queen. We open gifts and my mom usually buys a game that we can play altogher that night which is a lot of fun. Of course now that there are 5 grandchildren games are out and the evneing doesn't go very late. THis year it works out that everyone had nothing up christmas day and so we decided that would be the day for my mom's house. John's side of the family usually does Christmas day but john's sister and her family are going to hawaii over christmas. It doens't really matter cause had they not gone we still woulnd't have gone to john's family as i really wanted to keep christmas day to ourselves. For the reason that Camryn's birthday is on Dec.25 as well!! But seeings she is too young to care and understand this year it will work out ok. I bought a special snowman advent calendar this year from alocal store. Ia m trying to find things the kids will look forward to at christmas, i also purchased the little people nativity scene and am planning on making ornanments for the girls each year so by teh tim ethey have their own tree it will be full of ornaments i made for them through their childhood! I am also very excited to make a wack load of different christmas cookies. i love baking with janae already and i think it will only get more fun as she and camryn get older. I am still trying to decide if we will do a gingerbread house this year like we did last year cuase i really didn't enjoy it last year! Michael;s has it on this week for 8 bucks so we'll see if i do it. Anyways traditions in our own home will be created each year and as the girls get older it will change i think a bit. I am still debating on what to do wiht Camryn's birhtday as i don't want her birthday to go unnoticed. I can get away with it for a couple years but sooner or later she is going to wonder why she doens't have a special day for herself. Ok so there you have it folks! let;s hear some more great ideas!
well, obviously mine childhood experiences are similar to Christy's. But i also enjoyed drinking our punch or whatever from a wine-type glass. When we were young, our church had a Kids Program on Christmas Eve, so we were always involved in that whether it be singing, reciting a poem, or being a part of the nativity scene. My mom always had christmas dresses for us too, usually ones she had made. So we'd have our faspa dinner, then head to church, and then come home and open gifts together and stay up late! and us kids would buy for eachother too some years.
Like Christy said, it's hard to plan around so many people's schedules now as adults, and things have changed now that it's all about the grandkids! Since being married, Christmas morning after Brooke is done opening gifts with her mom (jen), she comes to our house. before we had devyn, we would actually go to jen's house and enjoy watching brooke open gifts with her parents and friends. then jen would make breakfast for all of us, and we would take brooke back to our house for gifts with us, and sometimes jen would come too. i know, it sounds wierd right? things were just good like that.. before anyways. a lot has changed over the years.. we don't go to jen's anymore. brooke gets dropped off here when she's done there and we do gifts and a light lunch and spend the day together before she gets dropped off for supper at her grandparents house. dan and i have been talking about coming up with our own 'christmas morning' so that we can actually have brooke here for night the night before and still experience the fun of 'christmas morning!' we might try that already this year. we'll see.
as far as Dan's family goes, they always have a meal christmas day. a few close family friends come to christmas dinner. they actually rent dishes so after supper we can just pack it all up dirty and enjoy eachothers company! one thing that they have always done is the 'money tree'. everyone puts in $50 and it gets divided into different amounts and put into envelopes. then dan's aunt pulls names and they get put on the envelopes. some come out much richer, others break even, and some get half or less of what they put in. it's fun, and it's all we do for 'gifts' besides parents. so it makes it nice and simple. last year the kids pulled names for eachother also. so that's about it. i hope to introduce new traditions for just our little family as they get older.. especially once we figure out something that works well with having Brooke here.
With our extended family, I love our tradition now of giving what we would have to each other...to a cause like world vision or the food bank. We don't need a thing, and people all around us need so much. We are so blessed! In our home we get up early on Christmas day, open stockings (yes even the cat has one) and have Eggs Benedict, our favorite breakfast which my husband is so great at making! We can also have a live tree, with real candles on it. We don't light the candles much (fire hazard) but sure enjoy it on Christmas morning. What a beautiful sight that is. We then go to church, because really what's it all about except that anyways? thanks everyone for sharing your traditions, auntie M
